CARNIVORE VS VEGAN

Truths, wrongs, and what biology actually logs

The lie both tribes share: Carnivore bros and vegan saints agree on one thing — the other side is poison. Biology doesn't do holy wars. It does inputs, absorption, signaling, and time.

This piece is a ledger — not a prescription. Read both columns. Choose like an adult.

CARNIVORE

Truths biology can support

1. Protein density and leucine are trivially easy

Muscle protein synthesis is sensitive to essential amino acid profile and leucine per meal (~2–3 g threshold for many adults). Animal proteins are complete, dense, and low-volume.

Evidence: Strong mechanistic + consistent intervention data on protein quantity and lean mass.

2. Ultraprocessed food drops to ~zero

Most carnivore protocols eliminate chips, soda, and industrial snack matrices by construction. That alone explains a chunk of real-world transformation stories — not secret cow magic.

Evidence: Strong for UPF reduction; attribution to "only meat" is overstated.

3. Satiety per calorie can rise

Protein is the most satiating macronutrient per calorie. Fat slows gastric emptying. Many adherents spontaneously eat less without calorie counting.

Evidence: Moderate-strong for protein-induced satiety; individual response varies.

4. Elimination can surface intolerances

Strict carnivore is an n=1 elimination probe. Some people feel better when gluten, lactose, or specific FODMAPs disappear.

Evidence: Mechanistic + anecdote-heavy; useful heuristic, not population doctrine.

5. Heme iron and B12 are non-issues

Carnivore sidesteps the two micronutrients vegans must engineer. That's biology, not morality.

Evidence: Strong.

CARNIVORE

Wrongs and oversells

1. "Plants are toxic — therefore optimal"

Plants contain phytochemicals and fiber with documented effects on gut microbiome SCFA production and satiety signaling. Zero plants for life is a tradeoff, not a free upgrade.

Evidence: Strong that fiber matters; weak that total plant elimination is long-term optimal for all.

2. LDL hand-waving is not science

Some adherents see LDL-C rise on high saturated fat. ApoB matters for cardiovascular risk over decades. "My uncle ate steak till 90" is anecdote, not ledger.

Evidence: Strong epidemiology + mechanistic; contested magnitude per individual.

3. Constipation and microbiome narrowing

Low fiber → slower transit for many. Microbiome diversity often drops on extreme animal-only patterns. Colorectal health is a decades question.

Evidence: Moderate for microbiome shifts; long-term endpoints need decades.

4. "Fixes autoimmune everything"

Autoimmune disease is heterogeneous. Some patients improve on elimination diets; many do not. Case reports ≠ cured population.

Evidence: Anecdote-heavy; some clinical interest, no blanket proof.

5. Social and adherence cliff

Biology includes behavior. Carnivore at restaurants, family tables, and travel is expensive socially. Diets people quit don't have outcomes.

Evidence: Behavioral — underrated, real.

VEGAN

Truths biology can support

1. Fiber feeds the colon

Gut bacteria ferment fiber → butyrate and other SCFAs. That pathway supports gut barrier integrity and metabolic signaling.

Evidence: Strong mechanistic + epidemiology.

2. Cardiometabolic profile can improve

Whole-food vegan patterns often show lower LDL and better blood pressure — when ultraprocessed vegan products are avoided.

Evidence: Moderate-strong for whole-food plant-predominant patterns.

3. High-volume eating for cuts

Plants are low calorie density. A lifter in a cut can fill the stomach while holding protein if planned.

Evidence: Moderate for satiety/volume; protein must be engineered.

4. Adequate protein is possible — engineered

Soy, legumes, seitan, blended plant proteins — leucine threshold still applies. Two hundred grams of broccoli is not two hundred grams of protein.

Evidence: Strong that protein quality/density matters.

5. B12 supplementation is correct biology

Cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin replaces a supply humans historically got from animal foods or fortification. Moral framing is irrelevant.

Evidence: Strong.

VEGAN

Wrongs and oversells

1. "Plants have all the protein" — without math

Incomplete amino acid profiles mean you need combinations and often concentrates to hit lifter targets.

Evidence: Strong on completeness; lifter failure mode is common.

2. Iron and zinc — bioavailability is lower

Non-heme iron absorption is inhibited by phytates and enhanced by vitamin C. Status labs matter for menstruating athletes.

Evidence: Strong mechanistic.

3. Ultraprocessed vegan is still UPF

Vegan burgers, cookies, and oils can be hyperpalatable industrial matrices. Biology logs calories and insulin dynamics, not ethics on the label.

Evidence: Strong — same UPF rules apply.

4. "Soy feminizes men"

At typical dietary soy isoflavone intake, feminization claims lack robust human evidence in euthyroid men.

Evidence: Moderate — normal intakes generally fine.

5. ALA → EPA/DHA conversion is inefficient

Flax is not fish. Algal DHA/EPA supplementation is often the rational vegan biology play.

Evidence: Strong on conversion inefficiency.

Most evidence for long-lived, strong humans sits in a band:

Carnivore and vegan are extreme anchors that teach tradeoffs. The middle is not "weak" — it's where most measurable outcomes cluster when execution is honest.
